The world had grown so hot that no one ventured outside unless it was necessary. Anya remembered when summers were for ice cream and beach trips. Now, it was for survival. Power grids failed regularly, and the air was thick with tension as well as heat. On the rare occasions it rained, the drops sizzled on the cracked earth. She wondered how much longer they could endure this heat, this relentless burning of a planet that could no longer bear them.
