The Soldier's Promise

He had promised her he would return. Every night, she waited by the window, eyes scanning the horizon for the familiar silhouette of her husband. Letters came less frequently, and when they did, they were short, filled with carefully chosen words that hid the horrors he had witnessed. On the day the telegram arrived, she didn’t need to open it to know the truth. The last promise had been broken.
